Sticking Out My tongue: From Gymnastics to Zumba: My Quirky Habit for Concentration

During a recent Zumba class, my instructor Sam pointed out something funny—I was sticking my tongue out while concentrating on some simple steps. It took me right back to my gymnastics days when I had the same habit during tough skills. This quirk has stuck with me, showing up whenever I need to focus, whether it's learning a new move or tackling a big task. It's a little reminder that focus and determination have always been a part of me, and hey, if you see my tongue out, you know I'm giving it my all!

Recently during a Zumba class, Sam, my instructor, caught me sticking my tongue out while I was concentrating on some dance steps. The funny thing is, they weren’t even complicated steps. As soon as she pointed it out, I was immediately transported back to my gymnastics days. My coach always knew when I was overthinking a difficult or scary skill because I had a tell—I’d either chew on my lip or stick my tongue out whenever I was concentrating really hard. But here’s the thing—I think these quirks are totally fine. In fact, they’re more than fine. They show that we care, that we’re engaged, and that we’re trying. So if you ever catch me sticking my tongue out in deep concentration, just know that’s my way of saying, "I’ve got this!" It's become a sign of determination, whether it’s at the gym or anywhere else in life.

And funny enough, this is exactly what I look like right now, trying to figure out how to turn these thoughts into a social media post and blog entry! The tongue comes out when things get serious—no matter the task. 😊
