Week 2: Am I Keeping This Out of Guilt, Obligation, or Someone Else’s Expectations?
Last week, we explored the power of asking, “Does this make me feel good when I see or use it?”
This week, we’re digging a little deeper — into the emotions that make letting go so complicated.
We all keep things (and thoughts) for reasons that have nothing to do with their value to us. Maybe it’s a gift you never liked but feel bad donating. Maybe it’s a volunteer role you no longer enjoy. Maybe it’s an identity, expectation, or “should” that once fit but doesn’t anymore.
Why This Question Matters
When you ask, “Am I keeping this out of guilt, obligation, or someone else’s expectations?” you’re really asking, Whose life am I living?
This question reveals the emotional clutter that comes from people-pleasing, fear of judgment, or old stories about who you’re supposed to be.
How to Use It
Try it with both the tangible and intangible.
Physically: that gift, heirloom, or outfit that carries guilt instead of joy.
Mentally: the commitment, belief, or role that drains more than it gives.
Notice how your energy shifts when you imagine letting it go. Freedom often feels like relief.
When It Helps Most
Use this question when you’re feeling stuck between what you want and what you think you should do. It helps you recognize how much of your clutter is tied to someone else’s expectations.
When It Might Not Fit (and That’s Okay)
If you’re someone who finds comfort in keeping sentimental items or traditions, this question might feel too harsh. In those cases, soften it: ask, “Does this represent love, or is it a weight I’m still carrying?”

Releasing guilt isn’t about being ungrateful — it’s about being honest. You can appreciate what something (or someone) brought into your life and still let it go.
