It’s the Little Things That Hold Us Together

A giant screw on my floor taught me a big lesson: strength doesn’t come from dramatic changes, but from the little things that hold us steady. Whether it’s decluttering one drawer or starting with ten minutes of movement, small steps build lasting stability.

The other day, I was sitting at the new desk in my home office when I spotted a giant screw on the floor. For a second, I thought, well, that can’t be good. My desk was still standing, but it made me pause: what happens when we lose one of the little things that keeps us steady?

This desk looks strong, but the truth is it’s only as solid as the dozens of screws, nails, nuts, and bolts holding it together. Miss one, and it may still stand. Miss too many, and it will eventually collapse.

And isn’t that the same for us?

We often believe it’s the big moments—the job changes, the bold decisions, the massive transformations—that shape our lives. But in reality, it’s the tiny habits, choices, and shifts that give us strength.

When I began decluttering, I didn’t empty my whole house overnight. I started small, asking myself simple questions: Do I love this? Do I use this? Does this drain me? Bit by bit, item by item, screw by screw, my space (and my mind) grew lighter.

The same was true when I lost 65 pounds almost 25 years ago. It wasn’t because of one dramatic overhaul. It was because I started with ridiculously simple goals—like moving for just ten minutes a day. Just one screw, tightened. Then another. And another.

It’s the same for you, too. The little things hold you together:

  • Choosing water instead of soda.

  • Saying no when you mean no.

  • Clearing one drawer instead of tackling the whole house.

  • Writing down one thing that you’re grateful for before going to bed.

Like the screws in my desk, these things may not seem significant on their own. But together, they create sturdiness. They make you strong.

And if you feel wobbly? It doesn’t mean you’re broken. It just means something small has loosened. You can always pause, notice, and tighten it back up.

Strength isn’t about being perfectly put together. It’s about maintaining the little things that keep us standing tall.
