50 Questions To Declutter Your Life #8:
If you’re new here, you may not have seen the first seven questions in this series. You can always go back and explore those on the blog, or you can start right here.
#8 Am I holding on to this because it represents money I’ve already spent?
Because this question comes up a lot.
So far, we’ve explored guilt, nostalgia, preparation, responsibility, and the fear of making the wrong decision.
This time, we’re talking about money.
Not about what something is worth now. What it cost then.
This is where clutter and financial emotion collide. We hold on because we spent money on it. Because letting it go feels like admitting we made a mistake. Because getting rid of it feels like we’re wasting something.
So we keep it. And it continues to take up space.
Why This Question Matters:
We don’t like to feel like we’ve wasted money.
So instead of letting something go, we hold onto it as proof that the purchase still matters. That it wasn’t a bad decision. That we’ll use it. Eventually.
But the truth is, the money is already gone.
Keeping something you don’t use does not bring the money back. It just turns financial clutter into physical and mental clutter.
This question helps you separate the past decision from your present reality.
How to Use It:
When you come across something you’re holding onto, ask yourself:
Am I keeping this because I use it or love it, or because I paid for it?
If this had cost me nothing, would I still keep it?
What is it costing me now to keep this in my space?
Use this mindset with clothing you never wear, unused kitchen gadgets, courses you never finished, subscriptions you forgot about, or anything that feels tied to “I spent money on that.”
Often, what’s really underneath is not the item. It’s the discomfort of letting go of the decision.
When It Helps Most:
This question is especially powerful when:
You have items with tags still on them
You feel guilt when you see something you don’t use
You keep things because they were expensive
You struggle to let go of things you feel like you “should” use
It helps you move out of Guilt and into Honesty about what actually fits your life now.
When It Might Not Fit and That’s Okay:
If something still serves you, even occasionally, or brings you real enjoyment, it’s okay to keep it. This is not about forcing yourself to get rid of everything that came with a price tag. It’s about noticing when the only reason you’re keeping something is because of what you paid for it.
A Thought to Take With You:
The money is already spent. The space it’s taking up is a choice.
You are allowed to make a different decision today than you made in the past.
